Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus : What Your History Books Got Wrong

Description

Some myths don't die, and lies are still being told about Christopher Columbus: that he "discovered" the Americas (not only was the land familiar to native inhabitants, but it had also been visited before by Europeans), that the land was sparsely populated by native people (there were fourteen million inhabitants in 1492), that those people were primitive (Europeans learned a lot and gained technology and agricultural skill from Native Americans), and that they submitted to Columbus's "God-like" authority (they submitted to the deadly smallpox and bubonic plague that Columbus's crew imported from Europe). Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus disproves the myths about Columbus still enshrined in American textbooks with quotations from primary source material that sets the record straight. The poster and accompanying 48-page paperback book sum up the mistellings--and reveal the real story--in a graphically appealing and accessible format that shows the degree to which textbooks have "lied" by knowingly substituting crowd-pleasing myths for grim and gruesome historical evidence.

Becky is taking riding lessons at the Cherrydale Stables. That's not news to Katie or her friends: In fact, they are sick of hearing about horses and sick of hearing Becky brag about what a great rider she is. Still, Katie convinces everyone to go to the horse show where Becky wins a medal in the first event, showmanship. The event looks pretty easy. However, Katie gets to see what it's like from the horse's perspective when suddenly she's switcherooed into Becky's horse Brownie. The Greeks Who Made Us Who We are : Eighteen Ancient Philosophers, Scientists, Poets and Others

Description

The Hellenic contributions to Western Civilization are acknowledged by all, but the details of this endowment are often poorly understood and under-appreciated. This volume is intended as a remedy for these shortcomings. In particular, it seeks to disclose two distinctive features of Western culture uniquely attributable to the ancient Greeks: a human-centered worldview that elevated humans to the threshold of divinity and a philosophical temperament which for the first time in history proffered unbridled operation of the human mind as a kind of cultural imperative. These features are demonstrated by a detailed examination of 18 seminal thinkers who left lasting impressions in such fields as ethics, medicine, religion, politics, poetry and art. Collectively, the efforts of these individuals helped establish a unique cultural pedigree unlike any other in world history. They invested the West with that restless, intrepid habit of mind that remains the hallmark of Western civilisation to this day.

Description

Do I want a baby? The biggest life decision we face. Deciding whether or not to have children is no easy decision. And for today's savvy tech-smart generation, it is no longer a question of when, but, if. Making that choice to forever change your life is daunting, and when considering the unknowns, most of us are left with more questions than answers. Should I have a baby even if I don't feel clucky? As much as they may desire a family, they question their readiness and wonder if they are prepared to accept the changes that having a baby would inevitably bring. Others believe being child-free is the right choice for them, but worry they may regret their decision later on when it is too late. In this book, Imogen Barnacle, a Human and Social services expert, and founder of the popular Parenting site Baby Boat, draws on her expertise and personal experience to help readers decide whether now is the right time to become a mother. Along with exploring the common fears and concerns surrounding motherhood, Imogen provides honest and real-life insight into her journey from being 99.9% sure she didn't want children, to happy, proud mother, and baby advocate. By presenting important information, posing thought-provoking questions and speaking openly about the fears, doubts, and joys motherhood brings she provides a real look at this modern day dilemma. Kansei Innovation : Practical Design Applications for Product and Service Development

Description

Developed in the early 70s in Japan, the Kansei Engineering (KE) method gives you the tools to develop profitable and well-received products and services. Written by the founder of KE, MitsuoNagamachi, and co-authored by one of his proteges, Anitawati Mohd Lokman, Kansei Innovation: Practical Design Applications for Product and Service Development shows you how to nurture Kansei, develop the skill in observing people, and apply that skill to the development and design of products. In this book, Nagamachi shares his 50 years of experiences in enterprise guidance and product development, including examples of exceptional service innovation at companies such as Nissan Motor, Mazda, Toyota, Volvo, Fuji Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Tenmaya Department Stores, Seibu Department Stores, Suntory, NEC, Sharp, Komatsu, Wacoal Corporation, Matsushita Electric Works (now Panasonic Electric Works), Boeing, and many more. These stories may surprise you when you learn about the new development of certain products that you already use. The book includes coverage of ergonomic and KE methods for studying human Kansei in product development and job improvement as well as discussion of how to use these methods for innovation in work improvement and activate KE for product development. It gives you a reliable instrument for predicting the reception of a product on the market before the development costs become too large. And, in the end, you will understand how Kansei-a seemingly dubious presence-is processed scientifically and able to have multilateral applications.

Dr Alan Huffman: Sultana : Surviving the Civil War, Prison, and the Worst Maritime Disaster in American History

Sultana : Surviving the Civil War, Prison, and the Worst Maritime Disaster in American History

Description

In April 1865, the steamboat Sultana slowly moved up the Mississippi River, its overtaxed engines straining under the weight of twenty-four hundred passengers--mostly Union soldiers, recently paroled from Confederate prison camps. At 2 a.m., three of Sultana's four boilers exploded. Within twenty minutes, the boat went down in flames, and an estimated seventeen hundred lives were lost. The worst maritime disaster in American history, the sinking of the Sultana is a forgotten tragedy lost in the turmoil of the times--the war's end, the assassination of President Lincoln, the pursuit of John Wilkes Booth. Alan Huffman presents this harrowing story in gripping and vivid detail and paints a moving portrait of four individual soldiers who survived the Civil War's final hell to make it back home.

Qigong is an aspect of traditional Chinese medicine that involves coordinating breathing patterns with physical postures to maintain health and well-being. Ba Duan Jin: Eight-Section Qigong Exercises is an accessible, fully-illustrated guide to this particular qigong exercise, which has been shown to improve the respiratory, cardiovascular and immune systems. Charles Dickens,Dr. Nicola Bradbury: Bleak House

Bleak House

Description

Part of Penguin's beautiful hardback Clothbound Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality colourful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design. As the interminable case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce grinds its way through the Court of Chancery, it draws together a disparate group of people: Ada and Richard Clare, whose inheritance is gradually being devoured by legal costs; Esther Summerson, a ward of court, whose parentage is a source of deepening mystery; the menacing lawyer Tulkinghorn; the determined sleuth Inspector Bucket; and even Jo, the destitute little crossing-sweeper. A savage, but often comic, indictment of a society that is rotten to the core, Bleak House is one of Dickens's most ambitious novels, with a range that extends from the drawing rooms of the aristocracy to the poorest of London slums.

It's a good thing Flinx is no stranger to trouble, because he's swimming in it. Even before the latest murderous attack by a new gang of assailants, there seems no end to people determined to arrest, examine, or kill him. To add insult to all that injury, Flinx has been spirited away and enlisted in a battle against a monstrous extra-galactic threat. Hidden behind the Great Emptiness, in a place where it seems matter and energy have never been, there is only evil. Pure evil that is approaching him, "accelerating." Karen H. Jobes,Clinton E. Arnold: 1, 2, and 3 John

1, 2, and 3 John

Description

Designed for the pastor and Bible teacher, the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament brings together commentary features rarely gathered in one volume. Written by notable evangelical scholars, each volume treats the literary context and structure of the passage in the original Greek, and each author provides an original translation based on the literary structure. The series consistently provides the main point, an exegetical outline, verse-by-verse commentary, and theology in application in each section of every commentary. Critical scholarship informs each step but does not dominate the commentary, allowing readers to concentrate on the biblical author's message as it unfolds. While primarily designed for those with a basic knowledge of biblical Greek, all who strive to understand and teach the New Testament will find these books beneficial. The Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series covers the entire New Testament in twenty volumes; Clinton E. Arnold serves as general editor. 1-3 John In her commentary on John's letters, Karen H. Jobes writes to bridge the distance between academic biblical studies and pastors, students, and laypeople who are looking for an in-depth treatment of the issues raised by these New Testament books. She approaches the three letters of John as part of the corpus that includes John's gospel, while rejecting an elaborate redactional history of that gospel that implicates the letters. Jobes treats three major themes of the letters under the larger rubric of who has the authority to interpret the true significance of Jesus, an issue that is pressing in our religiously pluralistic society today with its many voices claiming truth about God.

The Boy in the River: A Shocking True Story of Ritual Murder and Sacrifice in the Heart of London

Description

On 21st September 2001 the mutilated torso of a small child was found floating beside London's Tower Bridge, one tide away from being swept into the North Sea. Unable to identify the victim, the Murder Squad turned to Richard Hoskins, a young professor of theology with a profound understanding of African tribal religion, whose own past was scarred by a heartbreaking tragedy. Thus began a journey into the tangled undergrowth of one of the most notorious murder cases of recent years; a journey which would reveal not only the identity of the boy they called Adam but the horrific truth that a succession of innocent children have been ritually sacrificed in our capital city. Insightful and grippingly written, The Boy in the River is an inside account of a series of extraordinary criminal investigations and a compelling personal quest into the dark heart of humanity.

It's a good thing Flinx is no stranger to trouble, because he's swimming in it. Even before the latest murderous attack by a new gang of assailants, there seems no end to people determined to arrest, examine, or kill him. The species accounts stress the key points for field recognition and give a full description of the plumage, voice, range, distribution, status, and behavioural characteristics for every bird, with additional descriptions provided for hundreds of subspecies. Colour distribution maps are provided for all illustrated species. The book also includes a useful introductory section that presents a background to the ecology of China, a brief history of Chinese ornithology, and plenty of practical hints on birdwatching in China. The guide's portable format means it will fit easily into a backpack or pocket. John MacKinnon lived in China and Hong Kong for eight years, and has extensive experience of watching and writing about Chinese birds. He has been working in ecology and conservation in Asia for over 30 years, and his work in China included co-authoring the master plan to save the Giant Panda and its habitat. He has written and co-authored many books on the natural history of Asia, including a number of other bird guides. Karen Phillipps was born in Borneo, lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years, and has illustrated several other books on the birdlife of the region.

A Codeword is a special kind of crossword: there are no clues and all of the answers are placed in the grid, but they are in code. Each letter of the alphabet appears at least once in the grid, and each has been substituted for a number, from 1 to 26. In a Codeword puzzle, a single A Field Guide to the Birds of China: Ornithology free download pdf letter is always represented by the same number, wherever it appears in the puzzle. The challenge is to decipher the code. Two or three letters are usually revealed, to give the solver a head start. Only dictionary words are deployed (no proper nouns appear in the puzzles), so a good knowledge of English will help with solving the puzzles. Now in full-color, "Miller's Anatomy of the Dog, 4th Edition" features unparalleled coverage of canine morphology, with detailed descriptions and vivid illustrations that make intricate details easier to see and understand. Updated content reflects the latest knowledge on development, structure, and function, making this a valuable reference for anatomists, veterinary students, technicians, clinicians, experimentalists, and breeders. It is also useful in specialty fields such as mammalogy, biomechanics, and archaeology.

The Trespasser: The Most Hotly Anticipated Crime Thriller of the Year

Description

'Contains the most tense and serpentine interrogation scenes outside of John Le Carre' - Guardian This is the case she imagined. Precision-cut and savage, lithe and momentous. Antoinette Conway, the tough, abrasive detective from The Secret Place, is still on the Murder squad, but only just. She's partnered up with Stephen Moran now, and that's going well - but the rest of her working life isn't. Antoinette doesn't play well with others, and there's a vicious running campaign in the squad to get rid of her. She and Stephen pull a case that at first looks like a slam-dunk lovers' tiff. All she and her partner have to do is track down Lover Boy and bring him in. Then it'll be back to business as usual, watching from a distance as the real detectives go up against the psychopaths. Except when Antoinette takes a good look at the victim's face, she realises she's seen her somewhere before. And suddenly the conviction that there's a different answer takes her breath away.

My Bread: The Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method

Description

When he wrote about Jim Lahey's bread in the New York Times, Mark Bittman's excitement was palpable: "The loaf is incredible, a fine-bakery quality, European-style boule that is produced more easily than by any other technique I've used, and it will blow your mind." Here, thanks to Jim Lahey, New York's premier baker, is a way to make bread at home that doesn't rely on a fancy bread machine or complicated kneading techniques. The secret to Jim Lahey's bread is slow-rise fermentation. The process couldn't be more simple, or the results more inspiring. Here-finally-Jim Lahey gives us a cookbook that enables us to fit quality bread into our lives at home.

Walk in Hell: The Great War

Description

The year is 1915, and the world is convulsing. Though the Confederacy has defeated its northern enemy twice, this time the United States has allied with the Kaiser. In the South, the freed slaves, fueled by Marxist rhetoric and the bitterness of a racist nation, take up the weapons of the Red rebellion. Despite these advantages, the United States remains pinned between Canada and the Confederate States of America, so the bloody conflict continues and grows. Both presidents--Theodore Roosevelt of the Union and staunch Confederate Woodrow Wilson--are stubbornly determined to lead their nations to victory, at any cost. . .

Maria Montessori: The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method

Description

This book is Dr Montessori's exposition of the theory behind her educational techniques. First published in 1912, her method encourages the child to develop a sense of order and logical thought through liberty for the child, complemented by organization of the work by an adult (non-teacher).

Vollmann, Rick Moody, Joyce Carol Oates, Heidi Julavits, Jonathan Lethem, Michael Chabon, Ben Marcus, Susan Straight, Roddy Doyle, T.C. Boyle, Steven Millhauser, Gabe Hudson, Robert Coover, Ann Beattie, and many others. After years spent on ranches around Los The Montessori Method free download pdf Angeles, Clay Tahoma is delighted to be Virgin River's new veterinary assistant. The secluded community's wild beauty tugs at his Navajo roots, and he's been welcomed with open arms by everyone in town--everyone except Lilly Yazhi. And Melody begins to wonder if she'll ever know the truth about her past... In 1863, the French painter Ernest Meissonier was one of the most famous artists in the world and the darling of the 'Salon' - that all important public art exhibition held biannually in Paris. Manet, on the other hand, was struggling in obscurity. Beginning with the year that Manet exhibited his ground-breaking Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe and ending in 1974 with the first 'Impressionist' exhibition, Ross King plunges into Parisian life during a ten-year period full of social and political ferment with his usual narrative brillliance. These were the years in which Napoleon III's autocratic and pleasure-seeking Second Empire fell from its heights into the ignominy of the Franco-Prussian war and the ensuing Paris Commune of 1871. But it was also a period in which a group of artists, with Manet in the vanguard began to challenge the establishment by turning to the landscapes and ordinary people they saw around them. The struggle between Meissonier and Manet to get their paintings exhibited in pride of place at the Salon was not just about art, it was about how to see the world.

""Singapore Noir," like "Belfast Noir," once again proves that Akashic Books' noir series is better than any travel guide." This book is an adaptation of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola, to help you to embark on a life-transforming journey toward Christlikeness. For nearly 500 years, the Exercises have been a tool for spiritual formation. During those years their popularity has ebbed and flowed, but they are now experiencing something of a revival across the breadth of the Church. This is not a book about the methods or techniques of Christian formation but one that enables you to come before God through the Gospel narratives in order to encounter Jesus afresh. If you hunger for something deeper, yearn to walk with Jesus (not just read about him), and desire to embrace more of what God is doing in and through you, then this is the book for you. Larry Warner is the founder and executive director of "b", an organisation that develops and provides spiritual formation experiences and retreats. He is also an adjunct professor at Bethel Seminary in San Diego and the author of Imaginative Prayer in Youth Ministry (Zondervan, 2007).
